What Should I Do If I Encounter An Orphaned Baby Texas Opossum?

The Pearland opossum belongs to the mammal family of marsupials. They carry their young in a pouch that is part of their body. Other times, their young can be found hanging on their backs while they go from one location to another.

Opossums are also called possums by early colonists. This can mean a white animal. They are nocturnal and they dig up dens during the days. They can also go inside the hollow of trees or on an overgrown bush in order to rest.

The main reason Texas opossums wander about is to search for food. They love the variety and they will rarely stay at the same place 2 nights in a row. During the cold season, opossums choose to hibernate into a nest that is full of leaves. The hibernation only last for a few days. They can be active during the winter months even if the weather is severe.

Finding Baby Pearland Opossums

You might go outside and get fresh air when you see a baby opossum wandering about in a cold winter morning. You thought that it was probably an orphan since the mother is nowhere to be seen. Mother opossums can have 11 up to 13 liters in one go. This is the reason she will be able to have a hard time noticing if one of her young has fallen off her pouch or off her back. There is also the saying called “playing dead or playing possums”. They are a great escape artist and actors when they think that they are in danger. Double check if they are really dead or just playing dead. You should wear gloves when trying to handle them as they can scratch your bare hands if you are not careful.

Mother opossums will rarely go back to the nest if she thinks that none of her Texas babies survived. She will also travel to another location if needed.

If you are able to confirm that the babies are orphans, you might give them sympathy. You might want to feed them, care for them, and make them warm. The sad news is that opossums can’t thrive if it is handled by an inexperienced person. Survival for baby opossums can be hard especially if they are left on their own devices.

They are cute and funny Texas mammals but they can cause a lot of property damage when they are left alone. Their bites and scratches can cause leptospirosis, rabies and a lot more. You might want to handle them but you don’t want to get sick. If this is the case, call a professional pest control or a wildlife rehabilitator. They can get the opossums from your house and know what to do with them.

State laws regarding Pearland opossums can vary. There are some states that allow taking down opossums. There are also states where killing opossums are illegal. You should know your state policies well and you should contact a professional if you are in doubt.
